Correspondence from our CAM

Well it’s that time of year when we all begin welcoming our “snowbirds” home again.  Welcome Back!  I would like, however, to take this opportunity to recognize “the unsung birds” of High Point , the “YEAR ROUNDERS!”  These are the folks of our community who are left to run our Mobile Patrol, Golf Club, Fire Department, First Responders, Library and all of our other various clubs.  They volunteer their time not only to these groups, but to help neighbors.  They hold keys to check on their neighbors homes when they are gone, work on fund raisers and the list goes on and on.  So as we welcome back our Snowbirds, let’s give a HUGE THANK YOU for our regular birds.

DID YOU KNOW?

Waste Management allows 2 FREE bulk pick ups per year if you are a customer.  Bulk means, a large item such as a sofa, refrigerator, etc.  If you call them at 800-255-7172 they will tell you when they will pick up your item.  Please don’t put it out until at least the day before.  That should also be the rule for regular trash.

Travel Club by Trey Jordan

We are nearing the end of our summer season and heading into the fall and winter season, so the travel club is gearing up!  Starting in September, we have the Rays vs. Boston on 9/17/08.  On 9/24/08 we have a mystery trip!  These are always fun so get signed up for this one, lunch is included.  On 10/18/08 we are going to Cedar Key for the seafood festival and craft fair.  This trip is bus only and we will be there from 10:30 am until about 3:00 pm.  We also have a trip to Helen, Georgia on 10/20 through 10/23 of 2008 for only $379.00 per person, double occupancy.  This trip includes 3 breakfasts and 3 dinners.  This is a great trip for the price.  There are still some spaces left, so get signed up.  The cruise in December on RCL, The Grandeur of the Seas is still open and the price has been reduced for seniors.  How about an inside cabin starting at just $1515.00 for two people.  This is for a 10 night cruise.  Folks you can’t beat the price and it includes R/T transportation to the port.  There is a lot going on with the travel club and this is just a sample of the things we offer, so get to a meeting and see what else we are up to.  We meet the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month in the clubhouse at 11:00 am.  Happy Traveling!

CARE LINE
For those who live alone, the Hernando County Sheriff’s office has a program called CARE LINE.   To participate, you need to request an application from the Sheriff’s Dept. 754-6830 (ext. 53660) or you can pick one up at our office.  Then you must complete and return it to the Sheriff’s Office.  It works like this, once you are registered,
you must call the CARE LINE between 7 am and 11 am.  Should they not hear from you they will call the contact you have listed on your form.  If this fails; a deputy will be dispatched to your home to check on your well being.

C.E.R.T.  By CJ

               YOU’RE NEVER TOO OLD

To learn something new.  “Fay” kept most of us aware last month.  Did you have your plan in order?  Did you know how to shut your house down properly?  What would you do if a tree fell on electrical wires?  CERT Training can give you answers to the questions you haven’t thought of yet.  After you have taken a CERT (Community Emergency Response team) Class; not only will you be able to take care of yourself and your family, you’ll be able to help your neighbors and our volunteer fire dept.  The more helpers we have, the fewer victims we have.  Please be a helper.  For more information, please call “CJ” 597-3588 or Jean Albano 596-7435

A WELL KEPT SECRET

Want to ride the bus; but have no way to get to the bus stop?  Here’s the answer.  Just call 754-4444 and tell Trans Hernando where you live.  (You must live ¾ of a mile or more from the bus stop.)  Then you can call the day before (no later than 12 noon) and they will send a van to pick you up and take you to the transfer station (in front of Beall’s).  You must be back at the transfer station by 2 pm to catch the van back home.  Enjoy you Day.   CJ

Garden Club by Lynn Trotter
With all the rain lately, most of the lawns in highpoint are nice and green.  However all this rain can cause lawn pests to occur, like caterpillars.  Treat with Thuricide or Dipel and apply only to affected area.  Perennials to plant now are chrysanthemums, creeping phlox and verbena.

Congratulations to the September Beauty Spots
Andrew & Judith Andersen

Unfortunately there is only 1 beauty spot for September because one of our beauty spot signs was defaced by someone and a new sign is being made.
We are always in need of new members.  Please come to the Oct. 16th pot luck brunch meeting, time is 10:30.  Hope to see you there.

Mobile Patrol by Ed Oleszek:
National “Night Out and Light Up,” on Tues. August 5th was a great success.  The BBQ dinner was prepared and served by Bill Blossom, a man of many talents, and his helpers.  Cakes for dessert were made by Sheila Kirk and Sandy Peeters and they did another wonderful job, as usual.  Clay Kirk supplied the entertainment.   The Sheriff’s dept. came by with several deputies along with twelve explorer cadets handing out backpacks and visiting with all the folks.  There was plenty to eat and everyone had a great time visiting with each other.  After dark the Mobile Patrol drove around with lights flashing, reminding everyone to light up their homes outside to help fight crime in our community.
“Remember don’t invite crime” Lock it up!!!
Summer is almost over and our 1st Mobile Patrol general meeting is Monday September 22nd – 7 pm.  We welcome all residents and potential new members, refreshments will be served along with a guest speaker every month.  Also the Mobile Board will meet on Monday September 8th at 7 pm.

 BLACK DRIVEWAYS AND GREEN HOMES
We are approaching that time of year again.  With all the rain it becomes necessary to clean our driveways and homes.  We currently have over 50 complaints regarding black driveways.  Here’s Your Warning!  Bleach water works wonders.  Starting September 15th letters will be going out.

RUN FOR BOARD:

With our staggered 2 year terms.  This year there will be 4 openings, Jim Pilipchuk, Ellie Martin, Guy Peeters and Lynn Trotter.  If you are interested in running please contact Bonny Davis at 556-4112.  The deadline will be at our annual Budget, Nominating & By-Laws meeting on October 30th.

CHRISTMAS PARADE:

Did you hear the news? Santa’s coming to town and he is coming in a golf cart!  We will be having a golf cart Christmas parade before the annual Christmas lighting ceremony on December 5th.  If you’re interested in joining the parade with your golf cart. Call Shelia Kirk at 597-9887 or Sandy Peeters at 398-4433 for information.  Entry forms are also available at the HPCPO Office.  All participants must have the forms in no later than November 20th.

Just a note to clear the confusion for our High Point bowlers, your first meeting is September 4TH, 2 pm at Spring Hill Lanes.  Those who attend will receive 2 free games of bowling after the meeting.
